Every summer, Cambridge is host to Strawberry Fair, Europe's biggest free, one day festival. In collaboration with artists; Carmela Arbelaez-McCarthy, Cathy Dunbar and Helen Judge we took Front Bottoms at Mrs.Fubbs' Parlour to the Strawberry Fair Arts Area. This was euphemism on a grand scale, we dressed up, shared tea and dainties such as Little Shrimp and Split Baps and discussed the female form, from a feminist perspective, with over two hundred guests.

Mrs Fubbs Parlour is an artist collective staging playful, interactive events to disrupt. Their works encompass painting, sculpture, electronics, performance, fashion, and video, often blending these mediums in unexpected ways. As ‘Mrs Fubbs Parlour’, they celebrate the deviant body, pushing the limits of good taste by employing the absurd, the surreal, and the anarchic as forms of liberation from convention. Acknowledging real-life chaos and anomaly, Mrs Fubbs Parlour light-heartedly challenges the messaging and imagery of advertising. Join them in celebrating the deviant body

Socially engaged artist/curator Jane Hellings attempts, with varying degrees of success, to eradicate hierarchy from her practice. She chooses, in preference to a dedicated studio space, to work from home where her making is immersed in day to day domestic disorder. Hellings' processes are; low-tech, everyday, non-specialist, her materials, rarely purchased from specialist art suppliers, are predominantly recycled and re-purposed. She frequently shows work outside the conventional gallery space and often works collaboratively.

For over 30 years I worked as a self taught designer and dressmaker to the Cambridge intelligentsia, operating a sliding scale so that everyone could realise their dream outfit. After taking a degree in The Study of Art at ARU (APU), I re-discovered making art, as a joyful and healing process. Since then I have collaborated with many other artists, been involved in and instigated numerous art projects around Cambridge and, at every opportunity, encouraged the general public to find their creative spot. I am a founder member of The ‘Freudian Slips’, a safe space for women to realise their creativity and to perform and co-founder of the 'Society of Xtras' with Helen Judge and for six years, I co-ordinated the Arts Area (Eastern Bloco) at Cambridge Strawberry Fair. I am a socially engaged artist, a feminist and visual activist.

Miss Frou-frou's artistic journey delves into the realm of social beliefs, pervasive conditioning, and the ever-influential world of social media intertwined with platforms like YouTube. Over an extended period, her work has been a profound exploration of power dynamics, inequality, class, gender issues, and consumerism both within the art world and society at large. Finding inspiration in the nuances of everyday life, global affairs, trauma studies, and her own struggles with mental health, Miss Frou-frou instinctively reacts through her art, offering captivating creations that prompt contemplation about how society imprints restrictive beliefs upon our way of thinking. Through a masterful blend of imagery and materials, she embarks on a daring journey of investigation and challenge, inviting her audience to confront these deeply ingrained notions. Objects, mixed imagery, performances, and videos serve as the mediums through which she skillfully exposes the impact of conditioning and the persuasive force of social media, including platforms like YouTube. In the embrace of Miss Frou-frou's art, according to chat GPT: “ humor and playfulness intertwine with profound inquiry, guiding us on a transformative voyage of enlightenment. Through this whimsical and insightful lens, we are prompted to break free from the confines of limiting beliefs and embrace the delightful dance of life's complexities with newfound joy and understanding”. (doesn’t it sound good?) ;-)

"I like to mess with the conventions and expectations of various genres, formats, and visual languages, with a particular interest in horror, advertising and religious iconography. My academic journey includes a BA in History from Auckland University and an MA in Fine Art from Central St Martins College of Art and Design in London. This background informs my multidisciplinary approach, which spans performance, sculpture, film, and web art, although my primary passion lies in the moving image

I have showcased my work both nationally and internationally at galleries and festivals such as: Cambridge Junction, Wysing Arts, Temporary Contemporary in London, /Seconds, issue9 in London, The Big Chill in Bristol, Elektronentoto Kabinenschau in Düsseldorf, The Kitchen Gallery in Liverpool, Cinesonika 2 in Vancouver, and the Berwick Film and Media Arts Festival."
